17th December 2002

Technology is always coming before market. China starts working with the next generation communications technology or 4G, although the 3G is far from reaching. Yesterday, Alcatel's first in Asia research and innovation center was kicked off in Shanghai, which mainly engages in the research of 4G for the time being.

Now, vast majority of China's handsets users are subscribers to China Mobile's GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications). China Mobile and China Unicom are catching up with their 2.5G or General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and the Code Division Multplex Access 1 X (CDMA1X). As part of the "State 863 Programme" pushed by the Chinese Government, the framework of 4G is very important for telecom industry in the future.

The newly established Shanghai Bell Alcatel Research and Innovation Center is one of six centers of Alcatel in the world with 600 staffs, coming up with 400 patents every year. This center shares global resources of Alcatel and the first communications funds of US$ 18 million that is also the first batch of capital venture put on communications technology in China.
